Coal Blocks in West Bengal: – According to forecast of the Geological Survey of India as on 1st April 2009 out of total coal resources of 267.21 billion tonnes in the country, 28.32 billion resources of coal have been forecast for West Bengal. Coal resource in West Bengal in Raniganj-Durgapur area is abundant. In 2009-2010 alone 30.058 MT coal was extracted from the coalfields in West Bengal by the ECL. As per State dispensation policy of the Ministry of Coal, the West Bengal Mineral Development & Trading Corporation Limited (WBMDTCL) has been allocated six (6) Coal Blocks viz., Jaganathpur A&B, Trans-Damodar, Kulti, Sitarampur and Ichhapur. Now, under various stages of development, reviewing the prospecting, exploration, extraction & mine development responsibilities are undertaken by the Review Committee of WBMDTCL.
3-Dimensional High Resolution Seismic Survey (3D HRSS) is being employed for the first time in India for exploration in the 3 blocks of Kulti, Sitarampur & Ichhapur.
In consonance with the recently announced policy on allocation of small & isolated coal patches, the inventory of existing resources is being prepared by WBMDTCL.
The basic tenets of the State Rehabilitation & Resettlement (R & R) Policy are scrupulously followed while developing these coal blocks.Last Updated on: May 3rd, 2011
